Honda dealerships in New York might be expecting a convertible in a few years. Honda is said to be planning a new small sports car with a mid-mounted gas/electric hybrid powertrain and weight-saving construction. This new small sports car is definitely anticipated heavily, being that Honda hasn’t revisited the convertible market since June 2009.
The new 2-seat sport car is expected to be a blend of the feisty 2000-2009 S2000 roadster and Honda’s early 90′s mid-engine Beat convertible, which was only sold in Japan. A correspondent from Motor Trend, Peter Lyon, says the as-yet unnamed model is not expected before 2014, so we can safely assume that the design has quite a way to go. We’re hoping for a 2015 release! The 2015 Honda S2000, or whichever name the car actually receives upon release, will be a great addition to Honda cars in New York.
Lyon says the Honda convertible will be “based on a modified version of the [Fit subcompact car] platform.” “The patent refers to ‘an engine being fitted to a center frame,’ which means mid-engined and rear-wheel drive. The patent does not outline what type of powerplant would be used, but Honda’s current “green” policy rules out a pure combustion engine and a hybrid remains the most likely option.”
Whenever it debuts, our New York Honda dealership will be ready with open arms. We know fans of the Honda in New York will appreciate a convertible addition to the Honda lineup. Price has yet to be revealed, but stay tuned to our Plaza Honda blog and we’ll post updates as they’re released.
