Gas prices are on the rise again, hitting a nationwide average of $3.51 per gallon and climbing. As a result of the steep prices at the pump, consumers are once again turning to more fuel-efficient vehicles, particularly hybrids.
Last month, the Honda Civic Hybrid saw sales jump a staggering 53.8 percent. Currently, the Civic Hybrid boasts an EPA rating of 40 miles per gallon city and 43 miles per gallon highway. Other fuel-efficient models that saw sales spikes last month included the Toyota Prius, which garnered a 69.9 percent increase, and the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which earned an 11.7 percent boost.
“It’s just starting,” says Adam Lee, chairman of 20-dealership Lee Auto Malls in Maine. “We are not seeing a dramatic increase in sales (of hybrids and small cars), but we will.”
In addition to indications of increasing hybrid demand at dealerships, research site Emunds.com has also reported an increase in visitors looking for information on hybrids. The volume of people looking for hybrids on the site nearly doubled from November to the end of January.
“We’ve had kind of a slow, steady increase in prices” that has helped automakers prepare, says Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com senior analyst.
And automakers are indeed prepared. Domestic automakers like General Motors and Ford have bolstered their four-cylinder offerings. Meanwhile, Japanese automakers have introduced a bevy of hybrids and even EVs like the Nissan Leaf. Honda also looks well-positioned. Already the brand boasts a number of high-mileage vehicles, and for the 2012 model year the new Civic will become even more fuel-efficient
