The Honda CR-Z in Brooklyn was released with a flurry of interest. Unlike any other hybrid on the market, it promised performance and sporty driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel economy. And, with a base price of $19,545, the 2012 CR-Z is also a stellar value.

There are two models available for the 2012 model year. There’s the base CR-Z and a well-equipped EX. Based models feature a six-speed manual transmission with and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available as an option.

The range-topping EX adds High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlights with Auto-On/Off, fog lights, a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. The CR-Z EX is also available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition.

All CR-Z models are powered by a unique variation of Honda’s original IMA technology, which originally debuted on the 2000 Honda Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available for sale in North America. The system combined a four-cylinder engine with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system’s DC brushless electric motor. The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft. of torque.

The Honda’s sporty side or fuel-efficient side can be honed with its three-mode drive system, which features individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles:

Sport mode enhances engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort and the electric motor power assist.
Normal mode standardizes steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning settings.
Econ mode optimizes throttle angle for smooth acceleration, lower engine rpm and limiting power and torque by approximately 4 percent. It can also reduce the air conditioning’s overall load on the engine and modify the cruise control to operate more efficiently.

Best of all, this sport hybrid doesn’t sacrifice fuel economy. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 35/39/37 city/highway/combined mpg on CVT-equipped models and 31/37/34 city/highway/combined mpg on manual models.

The Honda Insight Brooklyn is a hatchback with its spirit in the right place, but everything else about it has practically no spirit at all. Honda has finally seen to its lackluster hybrid by tweaking nearly everything about it. Its face has been given blue eyes courtesy of tinted headlight covers, and the grille and front spoiler benefit from a welcome sharpening. In back, a revised profile for the spoiler means improved visibility.

The Insight’s sparse plastic interior is where TLC was most needed, and the loving comes via nicer seat fabric, “wood look paneling,” and stitching that breaks up the synthetic expanses. There is also more room inside, and less noise.

Under the hood of the Honda Insight Brooklyn is the familiar 1.3-liter i-VTEC mated to an electric motor, but tweaks mean that it gets better gas mileage and now puts out just 96 grams of CO2 per kilometer when fitted with 15-inch wheels. REDUCED CO2 EMISSION OF ONLY 96 G/KM* FOR THE 2012 HONDA INSIGHT

The refreshed Honda Insight is launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor show. The Insight is now even more environmentally friendly producing just 96 g/km* of CO2. The Insight also receives a new exterior design including a new front grille. The features within the interior have been improved for a superior perceived quality with two new interior colours to choose from. Rear visibility has been improved and rear passenger headroom has been adjusted. Revisions have been made to the engine and suspension for an overall improvement to ride comfort and stability. Two new exterior colours are available.

96 g/km* CO2 and improved Fuel Economy
The 2012 Insight will be available with either 15″ or 16″ wheels. In both cases the improvement on CO2 emissions is 5 g/km – which means that models with 15″ wheels now boast CO2 emissions of only 96 g/km* and models with 16″ wheels 100 g/km.

Fuel economy has been improved by means of improved aerodynamics and power train efficiency. Reduced engine friction and CVT efficiency together with improved air-conditioning benefiting from a new cold storage all contribute to a lower fuel consumption.

Exterior
The exterior design receives updates that help to emphasise the Insight’s smart image with efficient and aerodynamic styling. The new model year includes a refreshed grille and bumper design and also modifications to the headlights.

The rear has had a similar design treatment applied with a new tail spoiler which helps to improve rear visibility. Details of the license plate garnish have been changed as well as the tail lights, where the indicator surround is blue to highlight its hybrid identity.

Interior
New interior features confirm the improved quality and comfort of the 2012 Insight. These include a new seat fabric and black wood look panelling. The rear space has been redesigned to allow for improved head clearance of 10mm. This has been achieved by adjusting the angle of the rear seat and re-shaping the headlining so that it is curved at the edges.

N/V Improvement
Driver and passenger comfort has been increased by means of reducing the intrusion of engine and road noise from the suspension and tyres into the cabin. The front lower suspension arms are now made from aluminium, rather than steel and also a new tyre development has reduced the noise within the cabin.

Visibility
Refinements to the rear design of the car which include a new slimmed tail spoiler allows for a wider rear glass area, an improved tail gate garnish and the wiper motor unit has been reduced in size meaning overall increased visibility at the rear.

Bespoke Hybrid Model
The Insight utilises the efficient, compact and proven 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine, combined with an electric motor. This engine and motor combination is shared with the new Jazz Hybrid and both models benefit from the ability to run on electric power alone under certain conditions.

The combination of an ultra-aerodynamic body and a parallel hybrid powertrain gives the Insight impressive environmental performance with low overall exhaust emissions, not just CO2 emissions of 96 g/km*. The Insight has been developed to offer excellent fuel economy and emissions all of the time, not just in official tests. The Eco Assist encourages and assists drivers in achieving good fuel economy every day with the coaching function and ECON button.

Recycling of Battery Packs
Importantly the Honda Insight Brooklyn is manufactured in a plant where zero production waste ends up in landfill and a suite of energy saving techniques are used to reduce overall impact. At the end of the vehicle’s life the Insight is designed to be highly recyclable and recoverable and the batteries can be easily recycled through any Honda dealer.

The 2012 Honda Civic Brooklyn retains many of the qualities beloved by Honda Civic Brooklyn previous generations. Honda will avoid price increases on the Accord coupe and sedan for the 2012 model year. Its mainstay model will be priced at 2011 levels, even while the automaker adds more content.

The base 2012 Honda Accord LX sedan starts at $22,150, including a $770 destination charge, which is the same price as the outgoing model. The base 2012 Honda Accord LX-S coupe starts at $23,750, including a $770 destination charge, again, the same as the 2011 model.

“The 2012 lineup, features and specifications remain similar to the 2011 model year when the Accord received upgrades for fuel economy and styling,” said Honda in a statement this week.

Fuel economy is one of the Accord’s major strengths, and there are four engines that buyers will be able to choose from. These include the base 177-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to the range-topping 271-horsepower 3.5-liter V6.

2012 Honda CR-V Concept Reveals Dynamic New Styling of Future Model

Sophisticated direction of versatile compact SUV exhibits distinctive and bold new look for long-time segment leader

TORRANCE, Calif., July 25, 2011 – The 2012 Honda CR-V Concept provides the first official glimpse of the styling direction for the all-new, fourth-generation CR-V set to go on sale in the United States by the end of the year, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

“The 2012 CR-V Concept introduces the exterior styling for the more sophisticated and dynamic design of the upcoming production model,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. “Long considered the benchmark for packaging and user-friendly design in the small SUV segment, the all new CR-V will offer an added dimension of style, amazing interior versatility and Honda’s latest technologies for convenience and refinement.”

The CR-V Concept embraces a distinctive and bold styling direction for the top selling SUV in the United States. Compared to the current-generation CR-V, the concept model takes on a more aggressive stance with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia. The front bumper’s smooth-flowing lines are highlighted by a horizontal three-bar grille and deeply set multi-reflector headlights. The lower front bumper wraps smartly upward to convey SUV capability with a generous approach angle, while the lower front bumper design now integrates more smoothly with the fascia for improved aerodynamics.

The CR-V’s signature vertical rear taillights remain for 2012 with a more three dimensional style that wraps further into the design of the vehicle. The CR-V Concept’s large 5-spoke machined alloy wheels and bold fender flares emphasize the vehicle’s dynamic presence and capability. The all-new 2012 CR-V will improve upon the current model in a variety of ways, and will feature a more fuel-efficient engine and reduced body weight. In addition to allnew exterior styling, the 2012 CR-V will have an all-new interior with a more accommodating and spacious design with a lower cargo floor.
Currently in the fifth year of its model cycle, the CR-V continues to sell at a record pace.

The 2011 CR-V was among the highest-ranked vehicles in its segment for initial quality in J.D. Power & Associates’ 2011 Initial Quality Study (IQS), where it finished second to the Honda Element in the compact SUV segment.

The CR-V is sold globally in more than 160 countries throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The Civic Si is known for performance, so perhaps it’s fitting that the all-new 2012 Honda Civic Si will be getting plenty of track time as the new safety car for the IZOD IndyCar Series.

Beginning on the weekend of July 8 at the Honda Indy Toronto race, the 201-horsepower Honda Civic Si Coupe will be leading the pack of Indy cars during caution periods. To get the Civic Si ready for its new job, Honda added a string of performance modifications to enhance the Si’s high-performance characteristics even further, including:

Sparco seats and four-point racing harnesses
HPD high-performance brake system
Four-piston calipers, competition rotors, racing pads, and stainless brake lines
Front, side and rear under spoilers
Firestone Firehawk 225/40 R18 tires mounted on Enkei alloy wheels.

An exclusive graphics theme has also been added to further distinguish the safety car from a stock Civic Si.

“The high-performance new Honda Civic Si is the perfect match for the IndyCar Safety Car fleet,” said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president, auto sales. “With its larger and more powerful 2.4-liter engine and enhancements provided by HPD, it is ready to lead the IZOD IndyCar Series field at the Honda Indy Toronto and beyond.”

According to AutoExpress, Honda is working on a new Beat roadster, similar to the Japanese Domestic Market kei car that was produced from 1991 and 1996. That car featured a mid-mounted three-cylinder engine that produced just 63 horsepower. That little engine sent power to the rear wheels and helped drivers have loads of fun for very little money.

AutoExpress believes Honda is working on a new version that will utilize technology found in some of the company’s motorcycle offerings. The Beat would also utilize a dual-clutch transmission and either a 1.3 or 1.5-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine.

The Honda Beat could ride on the same platform that underpins the CR-Z sports hybrid. Because it would be short and have minimal front and rear overhangs, the Beat is expected to resemble the OSM concept, which Honda unveiled in London back in 2008.
