The 2015 Honda CR-V is one of the best compact crossovers available, from one of the originators of the segment. Plaza Honda in Brooklyn, NY has a large selection of these efficient go-anywhere, do-anything SUVs, and we’re ready to deal. Plus if you live in Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan we’re easy to get to.

The Mazda CX-5 for 2015 tried to inject some fun to drive, zoom-zoom into the compact SUV segment, but dollar for dollar it just can’t rise above the CR-V.

CR-V Fuel Economy vs. Mazda CX-5 Fuel Economy

The base trim Mazda CX-5 sport has a smaller motor than the CR-V, so you would expect it to achieve greater fuel efficiency, but that isn’t the case. The Honda is rated 1 mpg better for city driving, and 2 better for highway trips by the EPA. Move up to the larger motor that is standard in all-wheel drive Mazda CX-5s and the higher trim levels, and Honda beats it by 2 mpg in the city test.

CR-V Power vs. Mazda CX-5 power

That smaller 2.0-liter motor in the base Mazda CX-5 makes a lot less power than the CR-V too. The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder motor standard in the Honda is rated at 185hp, 30 more horses than the 2.0-liter in the Mazda. Even the 2.5-liter in the Mazda CX-5 is down 1 horsepower compared to the CR-V. And in order to get the larger motor in the Mazda CX-5 you need to buy the Grand Touring trim, or the AWD model, which start at $1,500, or $1,000 more than the base CR-V respectively.

CR-V Standard Features vs. Mazda CX-5 Standard Features

The base Mazda CX-5 doesn’t even come standard with an automatic transmission, so let’s compare these two crossovers with features and MSRP with the automatic. The Mazda CX-5 is about $500 less expensive, but you are missing out on standard features like:

  • Rearview camera
  • Reclining rear seat
  • Full Bluetooth connectivity
  • Pandora internet radio

No matter what sort of vehicle you are shopping for, if Honda is in that segment you will never go wrong buying the Honda. If you want a compact crossover, the 2015 CR-V should be at the top of the list. If you live in the New York City area, the dealer at the top of the list ought to be Plaza Honda in Brooklyn.
