2027 Honda Civic Type R: What's New, Price and MPG for Brooklyn Drivers

Published August 10, 2026 · Last updated October 16, 2026

The Type R is the rarest car on any Honda lot, and New York gets a small slice of a small allocation. The 2027 Type R reaches dealers this month. Here is what changed, what it costs, how it compares with the rest of the Civic lineup, and why 315 turbocharged horsepower still works on city streets.

What's new on the 2027 Civic Type R

Honda kept the formula and sharpened the details. The turbocharged 2.0-liter still makes 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft through a six-speed manual, and EPA ratings stay at 22 mpg city, 28 highway and 24 combined. What changed is how the car looks, feels and lives with you day to day.

Civic performance lineup compared

Type R comes as one fully loaded trim, so the useful comparison is the rest of the Civic ladder. These are 2027 prices from American Honda.

Type R news worth knowing

In December 2025 Honda collected four 2026 Car and Driver 10Best awards, more than any brand for a fourth straight year and the largest haul in the award's history. The FL5 chassis under today's car set front-wheel-drive lap records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and Suzuka Circuit during its launch program, and Motor Authority named it Best Car To Buy when it arrived.

Why a Type R works in New York City

A 315-hp track special sounds like the wrong tool for a city of potholes and double-parked box trucks. In practice it is the most usable car in its class here.

What we tell New York shoppers

  • Comfort mode is a real mode. The adaptive dampers soften meaningfully, so Brooklyn expansion joints stop being an event. A GR Corolla asks you to live with one setup.
  • Front drive with a limited-slip diff. Fit winter tires and it climbs a slushy side street without drama. No transfer case, no extra weight, one less system to service.
  • It is still a hatchback. Roughly 24 cubic feet behind the rear seats takes a bike wheel or a set of track tires. The rear bench seats two, so it is a four-person car by design.
  • Honda Sensing is standard, including adaptive cruise, collision mitigation braking and blind spot alert, which matters more on the BQE than on a road course.
  • Manual only. Rev-match assist makes it easy in traffic, but if nobody in the household drives stick, the Si is the same idea and the hybrids are the sensible ones at 48 mpg.
  • Budget for premium fuel and NYC insurance before you fall in love on the test drive. The tank is small and performance-car premiums here are real.

Inside the cockpit

The red seats get the photos, but the details do the work: aluminum pedals spaced for heel-toe, a machined shift knob, a cluster that switches to a bar-graph tach in +R mode, the LogR data app, and a numbered serial plate that quietly explains the resale values.
