Used Civic

Plaza Honda keeps used and certified Civics on the lot at 2740 Nostrand Avenue, sedans and hatchbacks across several generations. Here is which years to target, the one turbo detail worth checking, and how to buy one without inheriting someone else's deferred work.

What a used Civic actually costs you

The Civic holds its value as well as anything in the compact class, so a used one is rarely dirt cheap, but it has already shed the steepest depreciation while keeping most of its life ahead of it. The value sweet spot is a 2019–2021 tenth-generation car or an off-lease 2022-or-newer eleventh-gen: Honda Sensing is standard, the known early-turbo issues are behind them, and there is often warranty still on the clock.

Which used Civic years to target

Civic generations on the used market. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated and varies by engine and trim. Availability and pricing depend on mileage, condition, and history. Ask what is on the lot this week.
Generation Engines EPA combined What stands out What to check
9th gen
2012–2015
1.8L (Si: 2.4L), no turbo ~31–33 mpg Cheapest and simplest to own, long reliability record Service history, older infotainment, normal high-mileage wear
10th gen
2016–2021
2.0L or 1.5L turbo; Si and Type R from 2017 ~30–36 mpg The value pick and the fun one; Honda Sensing standard from 2019 On 1.5T cars confirm the oil-dilution software update and fuel-pump recall are done, and check the A/C; 2019+ are the strongest years
11th gen
2022–present
2.0L or 1.5L turbo; Si; Type R from 2023; Hybrid from 2025 ~31–36 mpg (hybrid up to ~49) Newest tech, best out of the gate, mostly off-lease cars How much factory warranty is left; the Hybrid only exists from 2025, so it is rare used

If you want the lowest price, a clean 9th-gen is the entry point. For the best balance of tech, economy, and running cost, a 2019–2021 tenth-gen or an off-lease eleventh-gen is the pick. If you would rather skip the turbo topic entirely, the 2.0-liter LX and Sport avoid it. And if you want a manual, the Si and Type R are the used Civics people buy for the drive rather than the fuel bill.

The one turbo detail worth knowing. On 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5-liter turbo, gasoline could mix into the engine oil during cold, short-trip driving. Honda addressed it with a free software update and extended the powertrain warranty on affected cars, and 2019-and-newer cars had the fix applied at the factory. It is a checkbox, not a dealbreaker: on any early turbo car we confirm the update and the fuel-pump recall are completed, both free Honda repairs, and we check the A/C, which is the other early-turbo wear item. Ask to see the service and recall history; we will hand it over.

What makes it work here

The Civic is one of the easiest cars to live with in Brooklyn, mostly because of its size. It slots into street spots and tight garage stalls a crossover cannot, turns inside most traffic, and sees out well enough that parallel parking is a non-event. Every used Civic from 2019 on has Honda Sensing standard, so adaptive cruise and lane keeping take the strain out of a Belt Parkway crawl even on the base trim. If you can find a rare used Hybrid, it is the thriftiest of all in stop-and-go city driving.

Worth saying plainly: no Civic of any year came with all-wheel drive. On good all-season or winter tires it handles New York fine, but if all-wheel drive is non-negotiable, the conversation moves to a used HR-V or another option elsewhere in Plaza Auto Mall.

Certified versus a regular used Civic

Some of our used Civics can be bought certified. A regular used Civic is the lower price, backed by our own inspection and reconditioning. A Honda Certified Pre-Owned Civic costs a bit more and adds the manufacturer's 182-point inspection and an extended 7-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the in-service date, which on an early turbo car is exactly the coverage that puts the oil-dilution question to rest. If you are keeping the car several years, certified usually pays for itself; if budget comes first, straight used is the value play. We will show you the price gap on comparable cars.

Compare the whole segment on one block

Plaza Honda sits inside Plaza Auto Mall, so a used Civic does not have to be the only car you drive that day. The group has operated on Nostrand Avenue since 1975 and brings five brands together, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, and Acura, with more than 1,000 vehicles within a seven-minute walk. Line a used Civic up against a used Toyota Corolla or Hyundai Elantra in one visit. Your trade is the lever most people underuse: a current appraisal often moves you from a used Civic up to a certified one, and we will appraise your car whether or not you buy from us.

Languages spoken on our team: English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Arabic, French, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Uzbek, Tajik, Turkish, Haitian Creole, Polish, and beyond. Ask for a salesperson in your language when you arrive at 2740 Nostrand Avenue and we will find the right person.

Frequently asked questions

Which used Honda Civic years are the best to buy?

For value and peace of mind, a 2019–2021 tenth-generation car or an off-lease 2022-or-newer eleventh-gen: Honda Sensing is standard and the early-turbo issues are resolved. A 9th-generation Civic (2012–2015) is the cheapest way in. Of the 10th-gen turbo years, 2016 saw the most complaints, so 2019 and newer are the stronger picks.

Is the 1.5 turbo Civic reliable, and what is the oil-dilution issue?

On 2016–2018 1.5-liter turbo Civics in cold climates, fuel could mix into the engine oil on short trips. Honda issued a free software update and extended the powertrain warranty on affected cars, and 2019-and-newer cars had the fix built in at the factory. It is manageable: on any early turbo car we confirm the update and the related fuel-pump recall are done before it sells.

Should I get the 2.0-liter or the 1.5 turbo used Civic?

The 2.0-liter, found on LX and Sport, is the simplest choice and sidesteps the turbo topics entirely. The 1.5 turbo, on EX and Touring, is more powerful and a little thriftier on the highway. On a properly serviced and updated turbo car, either is a sound buy; the 2.0-liter is the pick if you want the fewest variables.

How many miles is too many on a used Civic?

Service history matters more than the odometer. A well-maintained Civic routinely passes 200,000 miles, so a car in the 80,000 to 120,000 range with clean records still has plenty of life ahead of it. On CVT cars, look for fluid changes every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. We would rather sell a higher-mileage car with a full record than a low-mileage one with gaps.

Does the used Civic come as a sedan, hatchback, or coupe?

All three exist on the used market. The coupe was offered on the 10th generation and discontinued after 2020, so newer used Civics are sedans and hatchbacks. The hatchback adds cargo flexibility; the sedan is the traditional shape. The Si is a sedan and the Type R is a hatchback.

Does the Honda Civic have all-wheel drive?

No. Every Civic, of any year, is front-wheel drive. On good all-season or winter tires it handles New York weather without trouble; if all-wheel drive is a requirement, ask us about a used HR-V or another all-wheel-drive option in the Plaza Auto Mall lineup.

Is a certified Civic worth it over a regular used one?

Certified costs a bit more and adds Honda's 182-point inspection and an extended 7-year / 100,000-mile powertrain warranty from the in-service date, which is especially reassuring on an early turbo car. If you are keeping the car several years it usually pays for itself; if budget comes first, a regular used Civic is the value play.

Can I trade in my current car and finance a used Civic?

Yes to both. You can get pre-approved before you visit, and we will appraise your current car whether or not you buy from us. A current trade often covers a meaningful chunk of the price, or moves you up from a used Civic to a certified one.
