Buying Used: What "Certified" Actually Means

The word gets used loosely, so here is the difference between the tiers — and the questions that are worth asking whoever you end up buying from.

Three different things get called "used"

• HondaTrue Certified. A factory program with age and mileage limits, a required multi-point inspection, and extended powertrain coverage backed by Honda rather than by the dealer. It costs more than an ordinary used car, and the coverage is the reason.
• Franchise used. Inspected and reconditioned by a dealership with a service department, with a history report available and open recalls checkable by VIN. Not factory-certified, but the car passed through people who are accountable for it.
• Everything else. "Inspected" is not a defined term. It can mean a genuine multi-point check or a wash and a tyre-pressure top-up. Ask what was actually done and who did it.

What certification does not do

It does not make a car new, and it does not erase its history. A certified vehicle can still have had a reported accident. Read the history report on any car at any tier — certified included — and ask about anything on it.

Five questions worth asking any seller

• Can I see the history report? A refusal is an answer.
• Can I take it to my own mechanic? Also a refusal that tells you what you need to know. We say yes.
• What was reconditioned, specifically? Tyres, brakes and battery are the honest items. "We went through it" is not an item.
• Are there open recalls? Any franchise dealer can check this by VIN in a minute, and perform the work at no cost when it applies.
• Is the advertised price the price? Ask what is added before you sign, in writing, before you get emotionally attached to the car.

And one thing to check yourself

Get the car on a lift, or have someone do it. Ten minutes underneath tells you more than an hour of driving — corrosion, leaks, a soft brake line, signs of past repair. It is the single most useful step most buyers skip.

Directions from East New York to Plaza Honda

We are at 2740 Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11210, between Kings Highway and Avenue R, about five miles southwest of East New York.

The straight one: Linden Boulevard

Linden Boulevard west through East Flatbush to Nostrand Avenue, then south past Avenue H and Kings Highway. Usually 15 to 20 minutes outside of rush hour.

The diagonal: Kings Highway

Pick up Kings Highway at its eastern end near East 98th Street and follow it southwest all the way to Nostrand. One street once you are on it.

From Cypress Hills & City Line

Atlantic Avenue or Jamaica Avenue west to Pennsylvania Avenue, south to Linden Boulevard, then west. Add five to ten minutes from the northern end.

The parkway route

Pennsylvania Avenue south to the Belt Parkway westbound, then exit at Flatbush Avenue (Exit 11N). Head north on Flatbush and turn left onto Nostrand Avenue. Best when Linden is backed up.

Getting here by subway and bus

This is one of the easier trips in Brooklyn without a car. Take the 3 train west from New Lots, Pennsylvania or Junius and change at Franklin Avenue — the 2 is across the same platform, and it runs straight down Nostrand Avenue to Flatbush Avenue–Brooklyn College. From there the B44 runs south on Nostrand to our block. One transfer, one avenue. Check the MTA for current schedules.
