What Your Maintenance Minder Code Actually Means
Honda does not use fixed mileage intervals. Your car works out what it needs from how it is actually driven and shows a letter, usually with a number or two. Here is how to read it:
Main code A
Replace the engine oil. That is the whole item.
Main code B
Replace the engine oil and filter, plus inspections: brakes, parking brake adjustment, suspension, driveshaft boots, fluid levels, hoses and lines.
- 1 — rotate the tires
- 2 — replace the air cleaner element and dust/pollen filter, inspect the drive belt
- 3 — replace the transmission fluid (and transfer case fluid, if equipped)
- 4 — replace spark plugs and, where fitted, the timing belt and water pump; inspect valve clearance
- 5 — replace the engine coolant
- 6 — replace the rear differential fluid
So A1 is an oil change plus a tire rotation. B12 is oil, filter, the full inspection list, a rotation and both the engine air and cabin filters. Tell us the code when you book and the appointment is priced and scheduled correctly before you arrive.
General guide only. Your vehicle's own display and owner's manual are the authority for your specific model and year.
New York State Inspection near Flatbush
Every registered vehicle in New York needs an annual safety inspection, and in New York City an emissions inspection as well. The sticker on your windshield shows the month it expires, and driving on an expired one is a ticket waiting to happen. It is also the single easiest job to let slide.
We are a licensed inspection station. The sensible move is to have it done at the same visit as your next oil change or Maintenance Minder service rather than making a separate trip — and being a few minutes from home means it does not cost you a morning either way. Book it online or call (347) 284-1846.
Servicing a Honda Hybrid
If you drive a Civic, Accord or CR-V Hybrid, a few things work differently and it is worth knowing which:
- Brakes usually last longer. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so pads and rotors wear more slowly. The brake fluid still ages on schedule, though, and the hardware still needs inspecting — longer-lasting is not the same as maintenance-free.
- The 12-volt battery still matters. It is a separate item from the high-voltage pack and it is the one that usually strands people, especially on a car that does short trips.
- The high-voltage system needs a dealer. Not every independent shop is equipped or certified to work on it. We are, and we can check its state of health as part of a regular visit.
- Nothing to plug in. Honda hybrids charge themselves, so there is no charging hardware to maintain.
Dealer Service or an Independent Shop?
An honest answer, because you will get a self-serving one somewhere else. Both have their place:
- Anything under warranty, or any open recall — come to a dealer. Only an authorized Honda dealer can perform warranty repairs and safety recalls, and when they apply they cost you nothing. An independent shop cannot do that work, however good it is.
- Hybrid high-voltage work — dealer. Equipment and certification, not preference.
- A warning light you cannot explain — dealer. We have the Honda-specific equipment and the technical service bulletins for your exact VIN, which is often the difference between fixing the fault and replacing parts until it goes away.
- Timing belts, transmission fluid, valve clearance — dealer. Model-specific procedures and fluid specifications where getting it wrong is expensive.
- A simple oil change on an out-of-warranty car — either. We would like the work and we will do it properly, but we are not going to pretend a competent local shop cannot change oil.
One thing worth knowing: using an independent shop does not void your factory warranty, as long as the scheduled maintenance is actually performed and you keep the records. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Genuine Honda Parts & Accessories
Whether we are installing them or you are, our parts operation stocks genuine Honda components for every model in the lineup and can order anything that is not on the shelf — filters, brakes, belts, batteries and wear items; all-weather mats, cargo trays, roof and towing accessories; body panels, trim, lamps and glass.
Fifty Years on the Same Block
Plaza Auto Mall has been family-owned on this stretch of Nostrand Avenue, in Midwood, since 1975. Six showrooms share the property — Honda, Toyota, Acura, Hyundai, Kia and Plaza Used Cars — along with one service operation that has been repairing this neighborhood's cars for half a century.
A business that has to see its customers at the supermarket behaves differently from one that will never meet them twice. That is most of what there is to say about it.
Here for Something Other Than Service?
The same property handles the rest of it — the showroom is a short walk from the service drive. Browse new Honda inventory, HondaTrue Certified or used vehicles from all six Plaza showrooms. If you are weighing whether to repair the car or replace it, our advisors will tell you plainly which way the numbers point — and you can get an offer on your current car whether or not you buy from us.

Frequently Asked Questions About Honda Service near Flatbush
Where is the closest Honda service center to Flatbush?
Plaza Honda, 2740 Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11210 — in Midwood, on Nostrand Avenue between Avenue M and Avenue N, a few minutes south of Flatbush. It is the closest authorized Honda service department to Flatbush.
What does the A1 or B12 on my Honda dashboard mean?
A means an oil change; B means oil, filter and a full inspection list. The numbers add items: 1 is a tire rotation, 2 is the engine air and cabin filters, 3 is transmission fluid, 4 is spark plugs and valve clearance, 5 is coolant, 6 is rear differential fluid. So B12 is oil, filter, inspections, a rotation and both filters. Tell us the code when you book.
Do you do New York State inspections?
Yes — safety and emissions. The easiest approach is to have it done at the same visit as your next oil change or Maintenance Minder service instead of making a separate trip.
Can you service a Honda hybrid?
Yes, including high-voltage system work that many independent shops are not equipped or certified for. We can also check the battery's state of health as part of a regular visit. Honda hybrids charge themselves, so there is no charging hardware to maintain.
Do I need an appointment for Honda service?
An appointment is always faster and lets us have the parts ready. Book online in a couple of minutes or call (347) 284-1846. For shorter services you can usually wait; for longer jobs most local customers drop the car off.
Can you pick the car up for service?
Service pickup and drop-off is available across the NYC metro area. Ask when you book and we will confirm availability for your address and the work involved.
Will I know the price before the work starts?
Yes. You get an estimate before anyone picks up a tool, and a call if anything changes. Nothing is done that you have not approved.
Does servicing elsewhere void my Honda warranty?
No. Having maintenance done at an independent shop does not void your factory warranty, provided the scheduled work is actually performed and you keep the records. What only an authorized dealer can do is the warranty repairs themselves and open safety recalls.
How do I find out if my Honda has an open recall?
Call us with your VIN, or bring the car in. As an authorized dealer we can look it up directly and perform any open safety recall at no cost to you.
What are your service hours?
Service is open Monday–Friday 7:00am–7:00pm and Saturday 7:00am–5:00pm, closed Sunday. The 7:00am opening makes a before-work drop-off realistic.
